July 7, 2017 Dear Fellows, Spouses and Guests: It is my privilege to welcome you to the 2017 Annual Meeting of the American College of Environmental Lawyers. Charleston, South Carolina, will provide a fascinating and exciting backdrop for an important meeting that will exhibit the growth and growing strength of our young college. Everything about Charleston speaks of our nation’s history, going back to pre-Colonial days. The beautiful Mills House Hotel is historic in its own right, but also is located in the very center of historic Charleston. The Four Corners of the Law, the Charleston City Market, King Street, the Old Exchange, and the Charleston Harbor are a short walk from your front door. Our meetings on Friday will take place in the Hibernian Hall, a beautiful historic meeting place designed by the architect of the U.S. Capitol. Our Friday event for spouses and guests features a walking tour of historic Charleston with lunch at one of Charleston’s favorite restaurant with a culinary history of its own. Finally, on Saturday afternoon, you can choose to visit Fort Sumter, one of the most famous sites of the Civil War, or the USS Yorktown, a storied aircraft carrier from WW II that houses our National Medal of Honor Museum. The social side of our collegial gathering will be memorable in many ways. Together with our spouses and guests, we will open the annual meeting with a Welcome Reception in a beautiful poolside venue on Thursday evening. The Friday event for spouses and guests features a leisurely lunch at Magnolia’s with a “front porch” talk by Vera Manigault, a Charleston sweetgrass basket weaver and storyteller, with plenty of time left for shopping on King Street after lunch. Our traditional Friday evening soiree’ will be a lot of fun! We return to the historic and elegant Hibernian Hall for cocktails and dinner, with an up-close-and-personal performance by the Voices of Deliverance. During a sumptuous dinner of Charleston culinary creations, the Andrew Thielen Big Band will provide a thoroughly musical environment. At desert, the music will take an uptick for dancing into the Charleston night. Our annual meeting will close with a Saturday evening reception and low country dinner at The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. With suitable fortification, Fellows and guests will be taken on a guided tour of the dungeon where pirates and other scofflaws were (and might be) incarcerated. Our reason for gathering is to do the work of our college and to discuss the most important issues of environmental law and policy. In addition to inducting new Fellows, Officers and Regents, our committees and task forces will report on their work, results and plans for the coming year. Our four panel presentations feature discussions on current topics led by the nation’s best environmental lawyers. The success of the college’s wide agenda of important work depends on full involvement of our Fellows from across the country throughout the college year and on your direct involvement during this annual meeting. Come and contribute your ideas, talent, and hustle to help us do good things for our profession, our country and our world. See you in Charleston,
